The |veins| from the abdominal digestive organs (the |stomach|, |pancreas|, and intestines) and from the |spleen| empty ~blood~ rich in newly digested nutrients into the large portal vein. Branches of the portal vein empty into |venules|, which empty into the |capillaries| of the |liver|. The |capillaries| then reconverge to form the |hepatic vein|, through which ~blood~ is transferred to the vena cava.
